I really think social media fame can make someone a bigger target for crazy stuff to happen. With Valeria Marquez, she was super popular and had almost 200,000 followers, so she was basically in the public eye all the time. Like, every detail of her life was kind of out there for strangers—including people who might have real issues with jealousy, control, or just wanting attention.
From what I've seen, influencers in Mexico and other places talk a lot about people stalking or threatening them, way more than the rest of us. If someone already has problems with an ex or unsafe people, being famous online makes it even harder to hide or stay safe. Valeria even mentioned in her livestream that someone was trying to send her expensive gifts right before she was killed. That kind of thing totally creeps me out—it shows everyone was watching her every move.
It sucks, but if people want to be safe, maybe it’s better not to share everything or at least be careful about what they show online. But it’s not their fault—no one should have to hide just to be safe. The law should do more to protect people who get targeted just for being popular online.
