How come Hong Kong has separate laws and government from the rest of China?

So, from what I've seen and heard, Hong Kong is kinda like its own thing even though it's part of China. It used to be under British rule until 1997, so they came up with this idea called "one country, two systems." That basically means China owns Hong Kong, but Hong Kong gets to keep its own government, legal system, and money for 50 years after the handover. That’s why Hong Kong has different laws, courts, and even passports than mainland China.

But a lot of people think China has been slowly making Hong Kong more like the rest of China. Stuff like the national security law seem to take away some of Hong Kong’s special freedoms. In my opinion, it’s weird to have one city with so many differences, but that’s why everybody always talks about Hong Kong politics. It’s a mix of history, promises, and a lot of arguments about what was supposed to stay the same and what’s actually happening now.
