This situation with Adriana Smith in Georgia is honestly pretty shocking. Her family's hands are totally tied because of Georgia's heartbeat law. Like, even though Adriana is brain dead and has been on life support for over three months, the law says doctors can't end the pregnancy just because she's not conscious anymore. Only if her life is in danger, or in cases of rape or incest, can they make that decision, and brain death doesn't count as life-threatening for the law.

I've read that her family feels powerless, which makes total sense. In other places, the family could usually decide, but in Georgia, the law pretty much forces them to keep Adriana's body alive until the baby can maybe survive. That could be like 32 weeks! The emotional stress must be unreal for them. It's so tough seeing a law that shuts out the family's wishes during probably one of the worst moments of their lives. I really think situations like this show how strict laws can end up hurting families more than helping. They should definitely be allowed more say in something this personal.
