Honestly, YES is like one of those bands that pretty much invented a whole style—progressive rock. If you’re into stuff like long songs with crazy solos, weird time changes, and big epic lyrics, they’re at the start of all that. Even if you’ve never played one of their albums, you’ve probably heard Roundabout or Owner of a Lonely Heart on a random classic rock radio station.

What makes YES special is they take risks. Instead of just playing three-minute pop songs, they go for wild, complicated epic tracks that pushed what rock bands could do back in the day. They also had that super famous Roger Dean album art (all the trippy flying islands and stuff), so their records always stood out.

I only got into them because my friend’s parent kept talking them up, but now I kind of get why they mattered. Even bands today pull ideas from YES, from nerdy math rock groups to even pop artists. The fact they still tour and pull crowds after five decades is kind of proof that what they made is way bigger than just old people music. Worth checking out for sure!
