I’ve totally noticed Tyler Perry trying different stuff lately! So, with Straw, he’s way more serious than his typical Madea comedy movies. I saw the trailer and it’s got Taraji P. Henson, and it looks stressful in a good way—like, for real, it’s about this single mom who has this awful day and then gets caught up in some crime drama. That’s nothing like the regular Madea craziness where everything’s a joke.

From what I read, this one dropped on Netflix right before the new Madea’s Destination Wedding movie, so Perry is literally doing both at the same time. I kinda like that he doesn’t stick to just one thing. I get bored when people only do comedies forever, you know? Stretching out into real-life drama means he’s taking risks, and not every movie has to be laugh-out-loud funny. I’ve always liked seeing actors and directors try different vibes. I’ll be watching Straw for sure, but I’ll probably go back to the new Madea movie when I need to laugh with my cousins.
