So, I've wondered about this too. Like, Skype is retiring in May 2025 and now Microsoft layoffs are happening almost at the same time, which seems pretty sus if you ask me. In my opinion, it's probably not just a weird coincidence. A lot of times when companies end old products or services, they just don't need as many people to keep things running.

I've heard from someone who works in tech that big companies like Microsoft have to move people around or cut roles if they're shifting from one app (like Skype) to another (like Teams). So if they're putting all their energy into Teams and ditching Skype, they might not need as many engineers or support workers who were on Skype. It's honestly sad, but that business logic kinda checks out. Plus, these changes usually focus on saving money and making everything more "efficient" (which is just code for letting people go sometimes). Still, for the people losing jobs, it's pretty rough timing. I wish companies did more to help folks land on their feet when big changes like this hit.
