Yeah, I really think Tyler Perry wanted Straw to get people worked up over how cops treat poor folks. I watched the movie with my mom and she literally started ranting at the TV when the cops kept making things worse for Janiyah. Perry’s movies usually have a bunch of drama, but this one pushes harder, like it almost dares you to feel uncomfortable when you see Janiyah getting treated like trash for just trying to survive. It’s not subtle—like, she’s broke, she’s Black, and she gets harassed at every turn until she totally snaps. There’s even a livestream of her hostage speech that made her look like a kind of hero to people online in the movie. Some of my friends said it goes too far, but honestly, I think that’s the point. Even the cast said Perry changed the ending to keep it from being too depressing. Bottom line, Straw 100% wants people talking about how messed up it is for people struggling with bills and how unfair things really get when you add the police into it. Whether you agree or not, you end up talking about it.
