Ken saro wiwa was honestly a huge deal in Nigeria when it came to standing up for his people, the Ogoni. I've read about how he led tons of protests and campaigns against the government and big oil companies because they were messing up the environment in the Niger Delta. Like, my uncle lives out there, and he always tells me how the oil spills ruined the farmland and the water, so I get why Saro-Wiwa was so loud about it.
Basically, he organized the Ogoni people to demand their rights and fight for the environment. But the government at the time just saw him as a troublemaker. After a super controversial trial, they executed him and eight others in 1995. Most people think the charges were fake and just used to scare anyone who would dare stand up to the government or the oil companies. Everybody in Nigeria knows the trial was a joke and it made the world see Nigeria in a really bad light. It's honestly wild because now, almost 30 years later, his fight is finally getting the respect it deserved.
