Oh, definitely, Justice Uwais was known for shaking things up in Nigeria’s law and government, especially with his take on electoral reforms. I remember reading about how he didn’t just sit quietly as Chief Justice; he actually led the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee after retiring from the Supreme Court! Some big things he pushed for included creating an independent electoral commission and trying to make electronic voting a reality in Nigeria. He also wanted politicians and political parties to be more transparent by reforming how they’re financed.
A lot of his recommendations still get talked about today, even though not everything he wanted was put into action. For instance, he suggested that the judiciary pick the head of Nigeria’s electoral commission (INEC), but the government didn’t go for it. Still, a lot of people respect the guy for seriously trying to reduce rigged elections and build more trust in the voting process. In my mind, his courage to go against the usual way things were done is what makes him stand out the most! If Nigeria sees lasting changes in elections, a chunk of that credit totally goes to Justice Uwais.
