Honestly, I think the Handmaid's Tale is scary because it feels way too real sometimes. I've heard a bunch of people say the show hits hard because of stuff happening in the news about women's rights or the government making weird rules. Even my teacher brought it up once in class when we talked about freedom and who gets to make choices for others.
Some parts of the show, like women losing control over their lives or being treated as just parts of a system, seem like things people worry about could happen in real life if we're not careful. I even saw debates online about how the show is like a warning to people to not become lazy about their rights. So, when people say it's important now, I think it's because it makes everyone kinda nervous, thinking "dang, could things actually go this wrong?" That's why, even if it's a little scary or sad, the Handmaid's Tale still feels super relevant.
