Okay, so Abdulrasheed Bawa laid it out clear as day in his book, and honestly, it’s kind of shocking how simple but effective these scams were. From what I’ve read, he talks about people filing claims for fuel they never actually brought into the country—they just made up the paperwork! There was stuff like over-invoicing, which is just asking for more money than the fuel was actually worth, and duplicating claims by putting in the same shipment twice using different names. Bawa also exposed how people forged shipping documents to make fake deliveries look legit, manipulated prices to squeeze more money out, and even smuggled subsidized fuel out of the country to sell for a higher price. It’s basically a checklist of what not to do in business! Bawa’s insights, coming from his work as the investigator on the 2012 probe, make it feel like he’s really pulling no punches about what went down. To me, it sounds absolutely wild—they were just gaming the whole system, and it cost Nigeria so much money. No wonder the government’s freaking out.
