When I first heard the EFCC was trying to get the court to seize 753 housing units they linked to godwin emefiele, I was like, wow, that’s a crazy number! The main reason they’re going after those properties is because they believe all that real estate was bought with money gotten illegally, like through stealing or abuse of his power at the Central Bank. Basically, the EFCC thinks Emefiele used his position to get rich and buy up all these places, and if that’s true, it’s government money that should be taken back.

From what I understand, the EFCC wants a court to give them the green light to grab the properties permanently, saying no regular person could afford that many homes on a government salary. At the same time, Emefiele and his lawyers are fighting hard, appealing the decisions and arguing that the properties aren’t actually his or they were bought legally.

It sort of reminds me of when they seize cars from scammers and show them off on TV, except this is on a way bigger scale. If it turns out the EFCC is wrong, though, that’s going to look really awkward, so they’re under big pressure to prove their case for real.
