May 29 in Nigeria is like their ultimate new beginnings day for politics. I've always thought it's a bit wild that every few years all the governors and the president change hands on the same exact day. They call it Democracy Day because that’s when civilian rule came back after years of military governments. Since 1999, it’s been the day when the president gets sworn in, so there’s always a ton of news, celebrations, and honestly, some protest too because people expect a lot of new promises.
This year (2025), President Tinubu is talking a lot about his economic reforms, saying things are getting better—even though a lot of people, including some of my friends in Lagos, are still feeling the heat from higher prices. Every May 29, you see a lot of heated debates in Nigeria about whether stuff is really improving or not, and politicians try to show they’re on the right track. It kinda reminds me of how every country has a moment where people hope for change, just Nigeria puts all the focus on this one day. If you follow Nigerian politics, May 29 is just massive for seeing where things might go next.
