Why are diesel fuel prices sometimes high even if crude oil prices are low? Does something else affect how much we pay at the pump for diesel?

Okay so here's the thing I noticed, and it kinda makes me mad honestly. Sometimes you see oil prices dropping on the news and you think, finally, diesel fuel prices are gonna go down! But then you go to the gas station, and the price is still crazy high.

One thing I've learned is that diesel prices aren't just about the price of crude oil. There are all these little other things, like how much distillate fuel oil is in stock (that’s basically diesel and similar fuels). The EIA shows those numbers and man, when stocks are low, prices shoot up no matter what oil is doing. There are times when supply chain problems, refineries going down, or even seasonal stuff (like everyone using more heating oil in winter) push prices up.

So yeah, oil price matters, but a shortage of diesel, refinery issues, or just more people needing it at the same time can keep prices up. I actually saw my parents leaving the car at home more because the price wouldn't go down even when oil did. Super annoying!

Hang in there, you’re definitely not alone in being frustrated by this.
