I've read a bunch about this, and I think Tyler Perry wanted to talk about how regular people, especially Black women, deal with stuff no one else sees. In Straw, Janiyah is basically drowning in problems—rent, her kid's health, school drama—and the movie shows how small problems pile up until anyone might snap. I think Perry's sending a message about how people don't always get the help they need from the system, and instead of judging them, we should try to get what they're going through. In my experience, even if things never get quite as wild as in the movie, everyone knows what it feels like when everything goes wrong at once. Perry's stories are usually big on drama, but this time it felt like he was angry about how invisible some people's struggles are. It's definitely not a chill movie, but I kind of appreciate him showing the ugly side, so people maybe think twice before assuming someone "deserves" what happens to them.
