Yo, it's all about trying to keep stuff clean and making sure people don't just use those big jobs to make secret money. I think the main reason Rivers nominees needed to declare their assets before the Senate gave them the green light was so everyone could see if they were already super rich before taking the job or if something fishy happens after they start.
I've read that in Nigeria, the Code of Conduct Bureau makes them do this so if a nominee suddenly gets way richer later, people can ask questions. It’s supposed to stop them from stealing public money or abusing power. The Senate doesn’t want drama after confirming people, so they want to be sure no one’s got sketchy cash or hidden properties.
In my opinion, even though it’s a rule, it’s more about making sure politicians don’t have it too easy when getting these jobs. If people didn’t have to declare, the public would never know who’s got what. For me, it's better to have the rule than not, but I wish they actually checked these declarations instead of just collecting papers.
