Honestly, NYSC is a huge part of growing up in Nigeria, especially if you just finished your university studies. I’ve noticed a lot of people complain because it kind of feels forced. Like, you finish school, and then you have to go wherever the government sends you for one whole year. Some people end up in really far places without good housing or jobs, and the pay (like the government allowance) isn’t much. My cousin went through it and just kept ranting about how disorganized things were—sometimes you don’t even get your monthly allowance on time!

Some people even say NYSC doesn’t make sense anymore and should be scrapped, especially when the whole country’s job market is tough. On the other hand, some say it helps unite the country and gives young people a chance to see life outside their home state (I mean, there’s not much else that forces you to leave your comfort zone like this). But honestly, if the government really wants young people to respect the program, they gotta make it safer and actually useful for careers. Right now, a lot of us just see it as this old law that’s out of touch with today’s problems.
