Honestly, I've wondered the same thing. So, the reason everyone keeps bringing up assets declaration for Rivers nominees is because it's supposed to help keep politicians honest. It's like, before they can get these really important government jobs, they have to tell everyone what they own. That way, if their wealth suddenly explodes after they get the job, people can ask questions about where it came from.
But if I'm being real, it doesn’t always mean a lot changes. I've seen stories where nominees declare everything like clockwork, pass all these security checks, and still nothing major happens if they get richer for weird reasons. Sometimes it feels like they're just checking boxes to look good for the public and the Senate. I mean, the fact that all 17 nominees got cleared with no problems kind of makes you wonder if it's just routine and not really catching anyone doing anything shady.
It could help if they actually followed up on these declarations and compared them years later. But right now, it seems more about looking like the government is fighting corruption rather than actually doing it. That’s just my take from reading the news and talking with my parents about stuff like this. If they really wanna stop corruption, I feel like the follow up is what matters most.
