That's a question I've wondered too, especially since I've seen all the headlines about UnitedHealth Group's rough year. Andrew Witty definitely faced some big challenges as CEO. At first, he was praised, especially with that crazy high $23.5 million salary in 2023. But then, so many disasters hit: denied claims made a lot of people mad, a massive cyberattack left doctors and patients scrambling, and costs kept going up.
I honestly think it goes both ways. He brought his experience from being CEO at GlaxoSmithKline and helped the company grow at first, but some things spun out of control. The antitrust investigation and that lawsuit for insider trading—plus that insane tragedy where a top exec was murdered—just made everything look worse. From what I've read, some of these problems started before Witty, but it's hard not to link the CEO to what happened on their watch. If you ask me, the company needed someone who could handle crisis better. Witty might have helped at the start, but from my point of view, everything just kind of unraveled during his time in charge.
