Honestly, this is one of those stories that gets everyone arguing at family gatherings. Some people swear up and down that mko abiola was poisoned the day he died because it's just too weird that he passed away on the exact day they were going to release him. I mean, what are the chances? And I get why people suspect foul play, especially with all the shady stuff in Nigerian politics back then.

But if you ask me, there's never been like solid proof of poison. It could've just been a heart problem or stress from being locked up so long. I remember watching a news special where they said American diplomats were with him right before he died, which makes it even sketchier to some folks. Still, nobody's ever come out with real evidence, so for now it's just a super juicy rumor that keeps the mystery of Abiola's story alive.

I guess that's why people don't really trust what they're told about politics here. Stuff like this just fuels more questions, and honestly, I'm not sure we'll ever know the real answer. But girl, that rumor is never going away!

The exact cause of MKO Abiola’s death on July 7, 1998, while in detention, remains a subject of controversy and speculation.

What is publicly known:

  • He died shortly after meeting with a U.S. delegation that included Susan Rice and Thomas Pickering.
  • Official reports claimed he died of a heart attack.
  • An autopsy was conducted (with international observers), and it did not find clear signs of poisoning.
  • However, suspicion and conspiracy theories persist, especially because:
    • He died a month before he was expected to be released.
    • The timing was politically sensitive — General Abacha had just died weeks earlier.
    • There were allegations of tea being served during the meeting — which some tied to his sudden death.

So, was he poisoned? There’s no conclusive public evidence proving poisoning, but many Nigerians — including members of his family — believe foul play was involved. Without full transparency or declassified details, the truth may never be officially confirmed.

So for now, it's part fact, part conspiracy, and mostly unresolved history.
