Honestly, I don't think Nigeria has really stuck to what June 12 in Nigeria was supposed to mean. Like, everyone talks about how it's Democracy Day now and says it's about honoring MKO Abiola and the freest election we ever had, but if you look around, have things really changed? People are still talking about vote buying and crazy election cheating. I mean, even during the 2023 elections, voter turnout was only 27%, which is super low.
I've read that stuff like police brutality, election rigging, and politicians just picking their friends to run for office happens all the time. A lot of people feel like it's just a fancy day off work now. My uncle still wears his old Abiola t-shirt on June 12 to protest because he says the government just pretends to care. I kinda agree, because the big problems that made June 12 a thing in the first place haven't really gone away. It feels like the holiday is just for show, but the real injustices and need for fair elections are still here.
If you ask around, most people want June 12 to actually mean something, not just talk and parties. So yeah, I think Nigeria has dropped the ball a bit, but I still hope things will get better if enough people push for real change.
