Honestly, Nielsen is way more important than most people realize for entertainment. It’s basically the big scoreboard for TV shows, movies, and even some music stuff. I always thought it was just for ancient cable TV stuff, but it actually helps networks and streaming sites decide which shows they keep or cancel. Like, if nobody’s watching some new series, Nielsen ratings will totally show that, so the studio might pull the plug.
It’s kind of wild when you think that a whole bunch of decisions about what ends up on TV or gets another season is based on this group’s numbers. Sometimes I wonder if that's even fair, ‘cause I’ve watched shows I thought were awesome but they disappeared super quick just because not enough people were watching at the same time.
In my experience, people kind of sleep on how much power Nielsen has. I think with everyone watching stuff on-demand or through different apps, Nielsen’s trying to catch up too. Now they have things like Nielsen ONE that try tracking across all devices, which is kinda cool, but who knows if it’ll really work for everyone? Basically, Nielsen is still holding the keys when it comes to what the world gets to watch, even if we don’t always notice.
