Is there a real reason the NYSC program is still compulsory for Nigerian graduates even though so many people complain it doesn't add value anymore?

Honestly, as someone who went through NYSC last year, I totally get why people say it's kinda outdated. But the government still makes it compulsory for graduates mostly to promote unity among the different regions and tribes. They really believe that sending you far from home makes you meet folks from totally different backgrounds. In my experience, though, most of us were just hustling to get posted somewhere chill and safe, and we didn’t really mix up as much as they imagine.

From what I've noticed, employers always ask for your NYSC certificate before giving you a job, so it kinda forces people to do it. But I feel like the job skills they teach you during NYSC could be way better. Most people just see it as something you’ve gotta do to move on, not because they’re learning that much. Still, the law is super clear: you can’t skip NYSC if you want certain government jobs or even some private ones. Wish they’d listen to young people’s complaints and update it, though. At least for now, we’re stuck with it.

Don't let it get you down—just power through it and focus on what matters most to you after.
