Joe Don Baker just had this way of making every role seem legit, even if the movie itself was kinda cheesy or low-budget. One reason I think people remember him is because he didn't overdo it. Like, whenever he played a sheriff or a bad guy, he still seemed like a real person and not some cartoon version of a "tough guy."
I remember watching Walking Tall on TV and thinking, dang, he's not just beating people up—he seems like he's actually thinking and feeling stuff, even when he's not talking. He does this thing with his eyes where you can sort of tell there's more going on in his head, and not every actor has that. Plus, he wasn't afraid to play bad guys, which I respect a lot. It's easy to always look cool, but he actually liked showing characters who were kinda messed up too.
So, what made Joe Don Baker stand out? I'd say it's the way he could be both intimidating and honest at the same time, which made his characters seem way more real than your average action hero.
