Honestly, there are people out there kinda worried about Sidi Ould Tah running the AfDB. Some think that since he's super into finance and comes from a banking background instead of being a high-profile politician, he might focus way too much on the numbers and lose sight of real people's problems. I get it, because sometimes bankers care about balance sheets more than, say, whether people can actually get clean water or electricity.
I remember when folks doubted technocrats taking over big jobs, saying they're too focused on "economic reforms" and not enough on the social stuff. Plus, Tah is from Mauritania, which isn't really a huge influencer in Africa, so some think he could get pushed around by bigger countries in the bank.
Also, with aid dropping and trade issues heating up, there's risk in changing leadership styles right now. What if Tah tries something bold and it just doesn't land? The AfDB has grown like crazy under Adesina, so there’s that whole “don’t mess with what’s working” thing, too.
But hey, sometimes the safe choice is the risky one. I’d rather see somebody try new things than just keep playing it safe, you know?
