Oh, I totally struggle with this too! I used to end up searching for every clue when I felt stuck. But after a while, I found a couple things that really helped me solve more NYT crossword answers on my own. First, you gotta practice a ton—it’s basically like learning a new language. There are tons of repeat clues in NYT crosswords, like “Oreo” or “Epee.” Once you catch on to their favorite go-to answers, you get faster pretty quick.

Also, try filling in what you’re 100% sure of and then look for little connectors. The themed clues seem tough, but sometimes reading the clue out loud or writing it down helps my brain click. I also ask my parents when I’m stuck; usually old people know totally random stuff! If you really want a boost, the NYT Mini crosswords are great for practicing. And don’t feel bad about getting hints sometimes; it’s all part of getting better at the game. You’ll start noticing patterns the more you play, I swear!
