So, on Democracy Day public holiday in Nigeria, a lot of things go down! For most people, it's a chilled out day since schools and most businesses are closed, but it’s honestly a pretty big deal for the government. I remember watching last year’s ceremony on TV where the President, Tinubu, addressed the National Assembly and shared a speech about renewing commitment to unity and development. There’s this official joint session in Abuja with the Senate and House of Reps, and sometimes the president gives out national honors to lawmakers, which I thought was kinda cool but also super formal.
People will often talk about the original 1993 election and what it means for fairness and justice in Nigeria; my uncle gets really passionate about it every year. The news goes wild covering all the speeches and the vibe of hope, though some friends of mine just see it as a break from work or school. Whether you see it as a political milestone or just an extra holiday is totally up to you, but for the big shots in government, it’s serious business!
