Honestly, I've heard my neighbor say that too! She thinks spending cash on big childrens day events is a waste, and she'd rather do a picnic or go to the park. I get where she's coming from, like, not everyone wants to spend on decorations, food, or activities just for a one-day thing. Some parents worry it's gonna spoil their kids or set unrealistic expectations. But from what I've seen, most of these events are either super cheap or even free, like Poulsbo Kids Day. Local businesses and banks sponsor it and even use it to raise stuff for charity, like collecting food for families in need. In my opinion, those big events make memories for everyone, even if you just watch the music shows or try some crafts. I guess it's kinda personal—some people just prefer small stuff, others like big community things. That's normal, but saying it's a "waste" ignores all the fun and learning kids get from it, and how it brings a bunch of people together for once.
