The craziest thing about pepe mujica's marijuana law is that literally no other country had done it before. When Uruguay legalized recreational weed, people freaked out, saying the country was going to become a mess, with everyone high all the time and more crime. I remember watching the news back then and thinking, did he just make weed totally legal? Like, my friend's parents thought the world was ending.
But Mujica had this idea that it made more sense to control the drug rather than let dealers get rich and make things worse. He wanted to get rid of the whole crime part by letting people buy weed legally from the pharmacy, tracking where it came from, and keeping it away from kids. It actually wasn't some "everyone get high" law, it was about controlling it and helping people who had problems. Even some people who liked Mujica thought he went too far, though—like, they were embarrassed or worried about Uruguay's image. Now, looking back, it kinda started a wave, cause other countries started having these talks too. Honestly, it was risky, but that's pretty much Mujica for you—he always went his own way.
