If you're thinking about adopting one of the surviving chicks from the Delaware USPS truck disaster, it's honestly pretty easy, but there are definitely some rules. The First State Animal Center and SPCA are the main places handling adoptions, since they took care of most of the birds. You usually just fill out an adoption application, say how many chicks you want, and if you’re using them for a backyard flock, they’re happy to help out. But heads up: the shelter made it clear they won’t let people take them if they plan to use them for meat, so you gotta want them as pets, egg layers, or just for fun.
I tried to adopt two chicks last year and all they asked about was if I had a safe place for them and what I was planning to do with them. I think the rules are super fair, especially after what the little guys went through. You might have to wait because a lot of people want to help, but honestly that’s a good thing. If you can give a chick a good home, I say go for it! Just make sure you’re ready for chickens—they’re cute, but they’re a lot of work. Seriously, good luck, and hope you find a fluffy friend.
