Okay, so this is kinda personal for me because my grandma always says that politics in Nigeria is more about where you’re from and what you believe than about what actually happened. With abacha, lots of people think the accusations aren’t just about the money or the law, but also about tribal and religious stuff rooting back to old rivalries.
Maryam Abacha actually mentioned this in her interview, saying people keep dragging her husband because of his background or religion, not just because of facts. I’ve heard on social media that some blame his region or tribe for the country’s problems, and others snap back, saying it’s just an excuse to cover up the real issues.
Honestly, it can be hard to tell what’s real because everyone adds their own "gist" depending on their side. I think a lot of Nigerians just want someone to blame, and it’s easy for bias to sneak into the way we talk about leaders. But at the same time, we can’t ignore the government actually got some money back that was labeled as Abacha loot, so it’s not all just bias, in my opinion. I think both things are going on at once, and that’s why the arguments never stop.
