Why did so many baby chicks end up abandoned in a USPS truck in Delaware? Was it really just a mistake or is there more to how live animals are shipped?

Honestly, the whole abandoned chicks USPS truck Delaware thing is just super messed up. From what I've read, a hatchery in Pennsylvania shipped around 12,000 chicks through USPS like they always do, but something went seriously wrong this time. The box of chicks ended up stuck in a postal truck or sorting center in Delaware for basically three days. Nobody fed them or gave them water, and it got really hot. By the time someone found them, almost half had died.

I've always thought it was kind of wild they ship live animals like that, but small farms and backyard chicken keepers order chicks all the time. The post office even said it's rare for something like this to happen, but after seeing this, I can't help but worry it's more risky than people realize. I get that mistakes happen, but man, they're living creatures. I feel like there should seriously be better rules or checks when mailing animals. If this was my batch of chicks, I’d be heartbroken. It really makes you question if this is the best way for people into chicken-raising as a hobby to get started.

If you're thinking about getting birds, maybe look for local sources instead. This just seems super rough for everyone involved.
