Honestly, I wondered the same thing at first! The Dept Q books are super Danish, and moving it to Edinburgh seemed a little random. But after watching, I kinda get it. Edinburgh adds this cold, moody vibe that fits with the whole dark, broken detective thing. It's still very European and gritty so it works for those intense cold case stories. Plus, I think Netflix wanted to shake things up so it wouldn't just feel like another copy of the Danish movies they already made.

A lot of shows are doing this now—making something local feel more global so more people around the world will watch. The new setting lets them hire awesome UK actors like Matthew Goode and Kelly Macdonald, which probably got more people hyped. I miss a bit of the Denmark feel from the books, but Edinburgh totally holds up for the whole sad detective vibe. In my experience, the switch doesn’t hurt the story at all, and it actually gets you looking at the characters in a fresh way. Kinda weird, but it works!
