Honestly, it just feels like the party in power in Turkey is freaking out about losing their grip. I mean, I remember seeing all these headlines and TikToks about how Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, was getting super popular and was a real threat to Erdogan's party. Then, boom—arrests start happening left and right. It looks a little suspicious, doesn't it? I've read that these leaders and even regular protestors are being called terrorists and thrown in jail, even though a lot of them just seem to be pushing for change.
It seems like the party is trying to scare people and send a message: "Don't mess with us." But that's kind of messed up because it makes it harder for anyone to disagree or even talk about problems in Turkey. Some of my friends who follow Turkish politics say it's only making the party look more desperate and anti-democratic. Even the UN and Amnesty International called out the mass arrests for being unfair. If you ask me, it's just power games, but it feels risky for anyone who wants real democracy in Turkey.
