Honestly, I've always wondered why we all stress about going through NYSC if it doesn't guarantee a job. Like, my cousin finished NYSC last year and he's still just sitting at home applying everywhere, literally no callback! From what I've seen, people do NYSC because it's required by the Nigerian government, especially if you want a government job or to even do post-grad stuff, but it feels like just a hoop to jump through.
Some people say it helps with discipline and seeing different parts of the country, but to me it's mostly just a year wasted for a lot of us. My older brother served in a village in Kaduna and he said the allowance isn't even enough to survive, so he was always broke. Plus, when his service ended, no one cared about his NYSC certificate in the real job market.
I get that it's supposed to help us understand each other better and promote unity, but I'm not sure if it's working like they want. Maybe the government should fix the system so it actually leads to something useful for us, instead of making us all do it just to get a piece of paper. That'd make way more sense.
