Honestly, I think Memorial Day in USA is kind of weird now because so many people treat it just like the official start of summer, all about barbecues, shopping deals, and long weekends instead of remembering fallen soldiers. But even though it seems like most people are just focused on leisure, there are still a ton of folks who go to ceremonies, visit graves, or do things to honor service members who died for the country.
I've noticed that people who have friends or family in the military, or who lost someone, take it way more seriously. Like, there are these events where they read out names of people who died in wars, or people leave flags and poppies at graves. Personally, my family always visits my grandpa's grave, and it feels way more meaningful than any store sale.
Yeah, it sucks that companies have made it all about shopping, but the real meaning is still there for those who want to remember. I guess it’s up to us to keep reminding everyone what the day is supposed to be about. Maybe one day more people will focus on remembrance again instead of just the parties.
