From what I've seen, winning american idol definitely gets you launched, but it doesn't mean you're set for life in music. I still remember how huge people thought the first few winners were gonna be forever, like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. They've stayed famous, but honestly, a lot of the other winners kinda fade after a year or two. I feel like it has more to do with what type of artist you are and if you can keep people's attention once people stop voting for you every week.
It's kinda wild because sometimes the runners-up or even people who got eliminated early end up having bigger careers. Like Jennifer Hudson didn't win, but she's an Oscar winner now! The show gives you a shot and a little money, some promo, and a record deal, but after that, you're just on your own.
So yeah, winning is awesome and you'll get a boost, but it's not always a ticket to mega music stardom. I've noticed you gotta have the right songs, look, and that X-factor or people just move on to the next season's winner.
