If I’m being real, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha was sort of underrated compared to big names like Fela or Osadebe. I mean, a lot of people in the east think he’s a god, but his fame didn’t blow up all over Nigeria like those other guys. In my experience, most school kids know Fela’s story but barely heard of Ejeagha unless their parents are big into highlife. Maybe it’s because Ejeagha’s music is heavy on Igbo language and proverbs, so if you didn’t grow up around that, it’s easy to miss the genius.
But in the Igbo community, he’s almost like a living (now late) legend. He’s the guy who kept traditional wisdom going at a time when most musicians were chasing pop hits. I actually started listening to him after Brain Jotter’s visit trended – pretty wild that a comedian brought him back for Gen Z, right? So yeah, he’s not as globally hyped as some legends, but honestly, his impact is next level in terms of culture and language. Sometimes, being underrated just means you’re appreciated more deeply by the people who get you.
