From everything I’ve read, Reuben Abati is pretty clear that he’s never had anything to do with the EFCC or Amaechi. There were rumors people threw around, like maybe he was in trouble with the EFCC or that he backed Amaechi, but Abati said flat out that it’s all made up. Actually, he mentioned that the EFCC even apologized to him for any confusion, which is sort of rare with stuff like this.

About Amaechi, Abati said he’s got zero connections there and hasn’t done anything political with him. In my opinion, stuff like this is just part of the crazy stories people make up to try to mess with a journalist’s image. Nigerian politics is wild for these kinds of accusations because everyone’s trying to knock each other down.

For most people who know Abati, I don’t think these claims do much damage, especially since he comes off as super transparent and calm. But for folks who don’t follow politics much, I could see how even fake rumors might make them suspicious. It makes his job tougher, but if you ask me, he’s handling it the right way by coming right out with the truth.
