Oh, this one always pops up around June! Democracy Day in Nigeria used to be May 29, since that was the day civilian rule started in 1999 after years of military rule. But then in 2018, President Buhari switched it to June 12 because a lot of people felt like that date meant more for real democracy. That’s when the 1993 election happened and everyone says it was the fairest election ever. MKO Abiola basically won but the military just refused to let him take over, which totally sucked. That election was like the moment Nigerians showed they wanted proper democracy, but the government crushed it.

I remember my uncle talking about how people celebrated June 12 even before the government made it official, especially in the southwest where Abiola’s from. It’s less about politicians taking office and more about the people showing they cared about voting and fairness. So yeah, June 12 feels like the actual symbol of fighting for democracy in Nigeria, not just whoever got power handed over on May 29.
