Why did people start doing prayer for new month anyway? Did it start with one religion, or do lots of cultures do it?

I've always been kinda curious about where this whole prayer for new month thing started. From what I read and what my dad told me, lots of different cultures do something similar. It's not just a Christian thing—like in Buddhism, people believe in cycles and fresh starts, and they have their own prayers or rituals at certain times. Some cultures have special meals or blessings every new moon. In Nigeria, it's become a really common tradition because everyone likes marking a fresh start, no matter if you're super religious or not. My uncle always says people just want to wipe the slate clean and get some hope going. So I guess this whole thing goes way back, maybe even before people had WhatsApp or phones to send messages. It's like everyone everywhere wants a little hope or luck for the new month, even if they say the prayers differently.
