Honestly, I was shocked when I saw the news about the Menendez brothers getting a new shot at parole. For over 30 years, everyone just assumed they'd stay locked up forever since they got life without parole for killing their parents in 1989. What changed is California’s law about people who were under 26 when they committed their crime. Now, judges can consider youthful offender laws, which are meant to recognize that your brain is still developing at that age and you could change over time. On top of that, the judge noticed they’d made pretty big changes in prison, like earning college degrees and helping other inmates. There was even a letter from a prison worker saying the brothers were decent guys behind bars!
Also, there’s been a lot more talk about the abuse the brothers said they suffered when they were kids. With so much attention on trauma and how it affects you, people are finally listening. Even some family and supporters showed up to say the brothers should have another chance. I think it’s wild how a Netflix show and big voices like Kim Kardashian got everyone thinking about justice and rehab instead of just punishment.
