Honestly, I think a lot of people slept on how much actor Kayode Peters did for Nigerian TV. When I used to watch Flatmates or Papa Ajasco with my cousins, everyone laughed at the jokes and loved the stories, but almost nobody talked about who was actually behind the camera. It's kind of wild because if you look at it, Peters basically helped start careers for a bunch of our favorite comedians and actors.
I remember reading how he worked on so many big projects and even took Nigerian stories international, like with Excuse My African. But when folks talk about famous Nollywood people, they usually mention the actors you see or bigger directors, not someone like Peters who mostly stayed in the background. Maybe it's because he did a ton of different jobs—directing, producing, acting—so he didn't have just one label, and in entertainment, people love putting you in a box.
In my opinion, people are finally realizing now, after his death, how much he shaped the industry. It always happens that way, right? Nobody really celebrates you till you're gone. It stings, but I guess that's how fame works. If you were a fan of those shows, you probably loved his work even if you didn't always know his name.
