Honestly, I was surprised when I saw Owens Corning making such a big deal about their FOAMULAR NGX insulation being better for the environment. I checked it out because my school had this whole project about green building. The thing that sets it apart is apparently the way they make it—they use some new blowing agent that cuts global warming stuff by like 90%. Most insulation uses chemicals that are bad for the air and can add to climate change. Owens Corning switched out that stuff for something less harmful, so companies and builders can brag about being greener if they use it.
It's one of those changes that most people don't notice, but if you care about the planet or want to meet building codes that push for less pollution, it seems like a real thing. They even stick R-5 on a board that's only an inch thick, so you get the same insulation with less damage to the planet. Sounds cool if you're into environmental stuff, though I feel like my parents only cared because it could maybe lower their heating bill in winter. Still, makes you feel better knowing your walls aren't hurting the earth as much!
