Honestly, even though it sounds good when people in government have to declare their assets, I think sometimes it's just for show. Like, every nominee in Rivers State had to do their asset declaration before taking office, and everyone's talking about how transparent that is. But, I gotta say, from what I've seen and read, it's pretty easy for officials to just declare what they want. Unless someone really checks, who knows if what they wrote down is real?
I've noticed people get super excited about these announcements, but not much changes afterward. No one faced any problems or got in trouble—there weren't any petitions or complaints, even though you’d think at least one nominee might have something sketchy in their records. I remember my uncle laughed and said, “It’s just paperwork so everyone looks good.”
If the government really wanted honesty, I think they’d actually dig into those declarations and do random checks. Right now, it just feels like something everyone does to tick a box, but not enough is being done to stop people from hiding stuff.
So yeah, it sure looks like a transparency thing, but I don’t totally buy that it changes anything. Maybe it’s just to make regular people feel better about what’s going on behind closed doors.
