Honestly, I do think making the Annabelle doll even creepier helps sell a ton more movies. It's kind of genius marketing, if you ask me. Ever since The Conjuring and all the Annabelle spin-offs came out, people are way more interested in the real doll and its backstory than before. Filmmakers know that if something is based on a "true" story, it gets people way more hyped. In my experience, half the time when a movie says "based on true events," it's mostly just inspired by rumors or urban legends, not real proof.
I've seen people online say that their parents remember hearing about the doll before the movies, but it was never this famous. Honestly, the real Annabelle looks nothing like the one in the movies. The filmmakers just made her scarier to get everyone talking! So yeah, I totally think the stories keep getting bigger and crazier so that fans keep going to see the movies, buy merch, and follow all the creepy updates. It's smart business for the movie studios, for sure.
