I keep seeing people on social media debating if this posthumous pardon for ken saro wiwa and the Ogoni Nine is actually going to change life for the Ogoni people, and honestly, I think it's more symbolic than real right now. I mean, it's cool that the government finally said, "Yup, we messed up," but for people still living in Ogoniland, the daily problems haven't magically disappeared. My friend from Port Harcourt says pollution is still bad, and a lot of folks feel like the government needs to actually clean up the land and help the communities, not just hand out awards to heroes after they're gone.
It's a step towards justice, for sure. The world is watching, and now more people are talking about ken saro wiwa again. But if the government doesn't follow up with real help—like fixing the environment and investing in schools and hospitals in Ogoniland—it's just a nice gesture without real results. Personally, I think the pardon is important, but there's a lot more work to do before the Ogoni people really feel a difference.
