So this federal judge, Gregory Wormuth, totally tossed out those trespassing charges against the 98 migrants who crossed into that buffer zone near Fort Huachuca. From what I’ve read, the main reason was because no one really told the migrants that it was a restricted military area. There weren’t enough signs or anything obvious, and a lot of it is just rough terrain. The law says you have to actually warn people if they’re not supposed to be somewhere, so the judge was like, how are they supposed to know they were breaking the law?

I get why the government was trying to crack down, especially with all this new military zone stuff at the border, but honestly, if you don’t tell people it’s off-limits, it just isn’t fair to charge them. I kind of respect that the judge paid attention to what actually happened on the ground instead of just going with what the rules say on paper. Makes the system seem a bit more human, you know?
