Honestly, this is the part that got people so mad. It took more than seven hours for the jail to even realize those 10 inmates escaped in New Orleans. From everything I’ve read, it happened because the only guard in their unit wasn’t even there—he left to get food! Plus, there’s basically only enough staff to cover about half the jobs, which is pretty wild for a place with dangerous people inside.
I think a lot of folks want to just blame the guard, but the problem is way bigger. The jail had issues for years: broken locks, not enough security cameras, and stuff like holes behind toilets (which is what these guys used to get out). The guard might’ve slacked off, but the system kind of set everyone up to fail. And three employees getting suspended kinda proves it wasn’t just one person messing up.
So, yeah, you can say someone was slacking, but honestly, the whole system sounds like it’s falling apart. If it weren’t so serious, it’d feel like something out of a dumb movie, but now it’s just really embarrassing for the city.
